More items to explore.Elf Assembly. The assembled Elves. These little chaps opened my eyes to the potentials and pitfalls of multi- part plastic soldiers. Pretend Sculptor The main benefit for me is I can pretend to be a sculptor by trying out different arm and head positions and seeing what looks good, but with the skill level dramatically reduced.
I think this significantly adds to the creative experience of our hobby, even if it costs you a bit of extra time. Only slightly spoiled when you see a real sculptor, like Mark Copplestone, put one of these kits together and start to add things…. When being made for production these models are made three times the final size by the sculptor, resin casts are sometime taken at this stage, then they are reduced in scale size during the final production mould making.
Things You Will Need As follows: A very sharp knife or scalpel; liquid polystyrene cement; small modelling side-cutters which always seem to have yellow handles ; preferably a cutting matt or gash card to work on; old stiff paintbrush; sticking plasters.
Having a Look When I am going to put together some of these multi-part model plastic figures the first thing is to have a proper look at the sprue and see what you have got. I usually start with a body and then try various parts out to see what I like, or copy. The Elf frames front and back. The box set contains six of the frames, enough to build 30 Elves.
The work surface and tools. Some people will wash the sprue before attempting assemble, but I have never done this. Best not to try chopping at it with a knife however, as is may snap in the wrong place, and you may damage other important parts on the sprue or even yourself! Once you have chopped all around the part it should fall out, without needing to be snapped off. I cut off just the bits I think I will for a whole model, body, arms, head and shield.
Definitely do not try to snap parts off with your bare hands. Removing Lines Some of the parts will need the fine mould lines removing before assembly. I cleaned them up with a very very sharp or brand new scalpel, scraping along the mould lines to remove these and removing any marks left where I chopped them off the sprue.
Once you have successfully removed any mould lines, the fine plastic detritus left should be carefully brushed into your bin with a stiff old paintbrush, otherwise this stuff gets everywhere because of the static charge in it.

If you are inexperienced with these kits, always try out an arrangement somehow before you commit it to gluing.Good review! Having played against dwarfs way to many times and now playing dwarfs, the idea of quick dwarfs imitating combat is slightly terrifying. Looks like rapid and supporting movements will be more important than in WHF.
To be frank, i've skipped the narrative part, as i'm more interested in your analysis of the rules. I think your report is quite clear. Seems to be a good format. I'm finding your explanation of the rules quite interesting. It seems odd about the lack of rules for crossbows.
Do they have other handheld direct fire weapons? Could you treat the crossbow as essentially a gunpowderless musket for instance? I was going to suggest just treating them like bows. Once you have a better sense of the rules you could start tinkering with how to make them more crossbow like.
It's hard to know till you get a better sense of the game though. Blue really enjoying the analytical battle report. It looks like it could be a good alternative rule-set for us to use. Looking forward to the next post. Interesting and very pretty AAR. I like the style with its combination of narrative, explanation and analysis. You could just treat your Dwarf crossbowmen as archers without the Fire Over special rule as you suggest. You can build all the Dwarf archers you will need from the Dwarf Warriors box of Oathmark plastic miniatures sold by North Star.
Thanks for your feedback. Yes at this point Morale hasn't played much of a part in this battle but as the Melee kicks off next round it will have more of an impact and I will discuss it then. And I understand about the "vibe" of the games as created Which means for dwarfs in particular there are very few Bowmen The Dwarf Bowmen that come in the Plastic kit are great but wouldn't fit with the rest of my troops in style. Your photos are great and the game system seems fluid enough, I especially like the shooting rules it seems as though support units will get more bang for their buck than out of WHFB.

Awesome, looking forward to more. Always exciting to see a new system. A battle report filled with 3 factions of your gorgeous minis will no doubt be a spectacle. The table looks superb! I'm eager to read the report as well as learn what the rules are like.
I also love 3rd edition, but have to admit that games can be a slog sometimes. Seeing this is a nice treat after a holiday weekend. Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts on the system. I've got a little something different for you all today While I am a die hard WFB 3rd edition fan, I do have interest in a set of mass combat rules that are more simplified and fast moving. I've dabbled with Dragon Rampant, and Donnybrook but was not over joyed with either and they both had more the feel of a large skirmish game rather than a small unit battle.
Oathmark is the first new set of rules that I've tried that I think will "feel" more like what I'm looking for.
I love a good skirmish game I've even gone so far as to say that my collection is not of individual figures So a couple of months ago Dustin and I started to hear some chatter about this game and started to pay attention. I think we were both getting interested separately The rule book was released right before the whole world went upside down I love a physical book.
And if I like this game enough I will probably still buy a hard copy After sitting on the rules for a couple of weeks I opted for one army of all human troops and the opposing force was a mix of dwarves and Elves.
As this was my first try with the rules I picked only generic troops for each unit. I did not pick characters champion, general, king, spell caster or any monsters or magic items. The rest I can add in later. I am also not looking to give a complete run through and analysis of the games minutiae. McCullough and having been playtested over the course of the last two years, Oathmark is already supported by an extensive range of figures by North Star Military Figures and has been hyped for a while now by all those concerned with its production.
Followed by the basics of what you need to play. From this you should be able to glean the going rate for an Oathmark unit. Note: The text below is the transcript of our flipthrough video for those who would rather read than listen. So back to playing the game. These are all stock statistics for a mass battle game, with Combat Dice being the one that gives the biggest clue to how the game will play. Points, special abilities, base size and equipment, including weapons, are also listed on the stat line.
We then move on to instructions for organising your units, including the leader figure A. Beyond rules for The Turn and Initiative etc. This is where the Combat Dice come in.
The unit engaged rolls one D10 dice multiplied by the number of figures in the front rank, to a maximum of 5. So, no buckets of dice here — just the five max. Players now calculate the Target Number they need to hit their opponent, before adding or subtracting modifiers.
So note folks, this is a game of figure removal, the rules allowing for a maximum of three figures being taken away in any given combat. Pushback occurs following combat, as outlined on page 41, and there then follows an example of how a round of combat could play out.
Following combat we continue a well-trodden path into shooting, which works in a similar fashion, and in the rulebook is again followed by an example of play. Morale is covered over two pages, in which we learn that units which fail their morale test are Disordered and a token is placed next to them.
The end of this section concludes with a double-page spread of artwork. Here some goblins change forward into combat. The whole book is punctuated by similar nice pieces of art which help break up the sections and create visuals for the early medieval feel of the Oathmark setting.
In this section we are introduced to Spellcasters for the first time — more on their wizardly ways later in the book…. All of these events are rolled for randomly on two tables. Two methods are suggested, the first being a basic tallying of points values between the forces of you and your opponent, and the second being a unique — as far as I know!
All this works in tandem with campaign creation, something designer Joe Mac is always keen to develop in his game. Then come the Army Lists.
Like the Indrik — woolly rhinoceroses that fight with the Dwarves or Ogres that fight with the humans. As well as the different fighting troop types the Spellcasters appear in the army list too and we see that all races — even the Dwarves! So Elves and Goblins can be on the same side in Oathmark!
