Whether you're racing the clock or just starting out, ain't nobody got time for dropped frames. Luckily, there are plenty of settings in Premiere Pro that can improve playback performance.

Here are 10 tips plus 2 bonus tips! None of them have to do with hardware or system configurations. This post assumes your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Premiere Pro. Also, these tips are not meant to be rigidly applied to all workflows. They're more like a troubleshooting list. See how they might be used in different stages of your editing workflow.

Obviously, if your playhead is stuttering across the Timeline then you know you're dropping frames. But dropped frames can be more subtle. Premiere Pro has a Dropped Frame Indicator which can be found under the Program monitor settings wrench icon. The green light turns yellow when dropped frames are detected. Now that you're equipped to identify dropped frames, lets look at some ways to prevent them from happening.

The easiest way to improve playback in Premiere Pro is to reduce the Playback Resolution. It's simple logic: the higher the resolution, the harder it is for Premiere Pro to playback.

Click the Playback Resolution dropdown in the Program monitor the Source monitor has its own Playback Resolution and select a lower resolution. Did you know you can assign keyboard shortcuts for each of these playback resolutions? Reducing Playback Resolution only applies to playback; it does not affect your export settings. You can change the Paused Resolution independently so you can see full resolution when the playhead is paused.

Paused Resolution is found under the Program and Source monitor settings wrench icons. Evidently, playback used to have a "slightly softer look" compared to paused even when Playback Resolution was set to full.

Toggling on High Quality Playback provides the most pristine viewing experience, but it's more likely to cause dropped frames. The visual difference of High Quality Playback is pretty negligible; Adobe says turning off High Quality Playback is the best choice for real-time playback.

High Quality Playback is also found under the Program monitor settings wrench icon. Proxy workflows in Premiere Pro make it easy for editors to generate proxies, attach existing proxies or reconnect their original footage.

Typically, proxy files are low resolution and have been transcoded to a mezzanine format e. The underlying purpose of a proxy workflow is for better playback performance. If Premiere Pro is choking on 4K h. It decodes and encodes your media for playback. Adding effects to your footage gives Premiere Pro even more to think about, sometimes more than it can process in real-time. One of Premiere Pro's greatest strengths is its ability to playback mixed footage in the same sequence.

However, you can help Premiere Pro by matching your footage and your sequence settings.A transition is an effect added between pieces of media to create an animated link between them. Transitions are used to move a scene from one shot to the next.

Premiere Pro provides a list of transitions that you can apply to a sequence. A transition can be a subtle crossfade or a stylized effect. By default, placing one clip next to another in a Timeline panel results in a cut, where the last frame of one clip is followed by the first frame of the next.

Transitions are usually placed on a cut line between shots. You can also apply a transition only to the beginning or end of a clip. Clip handles are extra footage before the clip's in-point and after the clip's out-point that you can use to manipulate a transition.

If the source media does not contain enough frames, clip handles may not be present as there is no extra footage to add the transition. Premiere Pro automatically creates its Clip Handles by repeating the end frames to form a freeze frame of the clip.

The transition appears in the Timeline panel with diagonal warning bars through it. When you add a transition, a colored overlay appears over the clips in the timeline. The transition does not shorten the clip. Note: While adding a transition between clips, make sure you have a clip handle at the end of the first clip and at the beginning of the next clip. Select the clip in the timeline. Use the Ripple edit tool to trim back the clip. Now you can add the transition.

For more information, see Trimming clips. To place a transition between two clips centered on the cut linethe clips must be on the same track, with no space between them. To place a transition between two clips, drag the transition to the cut line between two clips, and release the mouse when you see the Center At Cut icon. Note: As you drag over heads or tails of clips in the Timeline panel, you can see the area covered by the transition outlined.

To preview the transition, play the sequence or drag the current-time indicator through the transition. Transitions are typically double-sided as they get applied to both clips. Single sided transitions are only applied on a single clip. In a Timeline panel or the Effect Controls panel, a double-sided transition has a dark diagonal line through it, while a single-sided transition is split diagonally with one half dark and one half light.Chris Salters.

Technology, like people, has bad days from time to time. Particularly for us in the post-production world, this inevitably seems to happen at the tail-end of a project when everything is due for delivery.

Adobe Premiere Pro

It may seem trivial, but sometimes Premiere Pro or your machine just needs a fresh start. Complex software like NLEs tie up vast system resources, including the CPU, memory, storage, GPUs, and network bandwidth, which can naturally cause a performance hit after long editing sessions.

Take a minute to sit back, breathe, and have a mental reboot of your own. So you open up your project, but alas, the timeline is just not playing back right.

What are you to do? Your thumb slams down on the spacebar, the time indicator starts to steadily slide along the timeline, and then ev. Choppy playback in Premiere can be caused by a number of things, including hardware, effects, media resolution, codecs, sequence settings, or some combination thereof. First things first, double check with Adobe to make sure your hardware is up to par for running Premiere Pro.

Obviously, video effects, especially lots of them, can be hard for Premiere Pro to process in real-time. So if you simply want to playback your edit sans effects, then Adobe has you covered with a single click or keystroke. Alternatively, you can create a keyboard shortcut. You can also save some processing power by lowering your playback resolution in the Program Monitor.

Beyond resolution, codecs can be a prime culprit of choppy playback. Some codecs, like H. MXF are very processor intensive due to their use of inter-frame compression. These codecs are generally great as a delivery format, but terrible for editing.

So if time permits, transcoding your media to an intra-frame codec like ProRes can really speed your editing along. The second option can only be selected after restarting Premiere without any projects open. It clears the entire cache. Or that a sequence with footage of mixed frame rates has certain clips that experience the same issue. In both instances, this type of clip-specific stuttering is caused by how Premiere is interpolating the footage, rather than a performance issue rooted in your hardware.

Interpolation is the method for how Premiere handles playback of a clip at a different framerate than the actual number of frames per second it was recorded in. Mixing frame rates in a sequence is often a necessary evil, especially in documentary work. Say you plan to deliver in Dropping a Premiere is taking a 1 second Depending on the severity of the jitter, it may be in your best interest to use a hardware converter, like the Blackmagic Teranexto conform the clip s from Interpolation is also used when time remapping clips.

Adobe Premiere offers three interpolation options: frame sampling, frame blending, and optical flow. Unfortunately, that is not enough, especially when slowing a clip down substantially.

Proper speed ramping usually forces us to do some pre-planning when shooting video, which sometimes even includes math. Shooting at high frame rates allows editors to slow down footage in post and helps avoid the stuttery look. For our clips to play back buttery-smooth in a 24fps sequence, we need to know the precise speed to play back each of the 60fps clips so that there is only one frame for every 24th of a second.

Once you click ok, Premiere will do all the math for you and every clip in the sequence will playback at 24fps. Despite our best efforts, rendering is sometimes the only way to play back a sequence or parts of a sequence in real time.Glitch, splice or spin from scene to scene!
